Record, clean up and split audio on your own computer
MR Audio is a set of audio tools for narration, guitar and music. Record straight from your microphone, remove background noise, shape the sound with an equaliser and reverb, then export as WAV, MP3, FLAC or OGG. The recorders run in your web browser with nothing to install, and your audio is never uploaded — it stays on your device.
Voice Recorder
Record a voiceover or podcast, then reduce steady background noise like fans, hiss and room hum.
Instrument Recorder
Record guitar, bass and more, layer takes, and use the built-in tuner, noise gate and hum remover.
Song Splitter
Separate a finished song into vocals, drums, bass and other instruments with an AI model that runs offline.
Frequently asked questions
Is MR Audio free to use?
Yes. The Voice Recorder and Instrument Recorder are free to use in your browser, and the desktop app with Song Splitter is a free download.
Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?
No. Recording, editing, noise reduction and exporting all happen on your own device. The Song Splitter also runs on your computer, so your music is never sent to a server.
How do I remove background noise from a recording?
Record or upload your audio, open Reduce noise, drag across a section that contains only the background noise (for example the pause before you start speaking), then apply it. MR Audio learns that noise and subtracts it from the whole recording.
Which browsers work?
MR Audio works in current versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari on desktop. Recording needs a secure (https) page and your permission to use the microphone.
Can I split a song into vocals, drums and bass?
Yes. Download the free desktop app for Mac or Windows and use Song Splitter. It separates a song into vocals, drums, bass and other instruments, and can also isolate guitar and piano.
Voice Recorder
Record narration or voiceover, then isolate your voice from background noise.
A voice recorder that cleans up your audio
Recording a presentation, podcast or voiceover with a laptop microphone often picks up fans, hiss and room noise. This voice recorder lets you record or upload audio, remove that steady background noise, and polish the result before you export it — all in your browser.
How to record and clean up your voice
- Press Record and allow microphone access, or upload an existing audio file.
- Open Reduce noise and drag across a moment of background noise with no speech.
- Apply the noise reduction, then adjust the equaliser or add a little reverb if you like.
- Trim the start and end, then export as WAV, MP3, FLAC or OGG.
What you can do
- Record from any microphone, or upload MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG files
- Reduce steady background noise such as fans, hiss and hum
- 10-band graphic equaliser, reverb and a rumble filter
- Trim, delete, fade and remove clicks at the start and end
- Layer several tracks and export a single mix
Your audio never leaves your device. Want to record an instrument instead? Try the Instrument Recorder.
Instrument Recorder
Record guitar, bass, or any instrument and layer takes with overdub.
Record guitar, bass and more — and layer your takes
Plug in or use a microphone, record a take, then play it back while you record the next one. Overdub keeps every take in sync, so you can build up rhythm, lead and bass parts one layer at a time.
Tools built for instruments
- Tuner — chromatic, or presets for guitar, drop D, bass, ukulele, violin, viola, cello, mandolin and banjo
- Noise gate — mutes hiss and amp noise between notes
- Hum remover — removes 50 Hz or 60 Hz mains hum and its harmonics
- Equaliser and reverb — a 10-band EQ and room, hall and plate reverb on every track
- Export — save a single track or the full mix as WAV, MP3, FLAC or OGG
Everything runs in your browser and your recordings stay on your device. Recording a voice? Use the Voice Recorder.
Song Splitter
Split a song into vocals, drums, bass, guitar and more with an AI model that runs on your own computer.
Download MR Audio for your computer
The Song Splitter runs on your own computer, so your music never leaves it and it works without internet. The download also includes the Voice Recorder and Instrument Recorder.
About 400 MB. The AI models are included, so nothing else is downloaded when you first use it.
Which Mac do I have?
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then About This Mac. If it says Chip followed by Apple M1, M2 or similar, choose Apple silicon. If it says Processor followed by Intel, choose Intel.
Installing on a Mac
- Open the downloaded .dmg file and drag MR Audio into the Applications folder.
- The first time, right-click (or Control-click) MR Audio and choose Open, then click Open again. This is needed once because the app is not yet signed by Apple.
- If you see a microphone request, choose Allow so the recorders can hear you.
Installing on Windows
- Right-click the downloaded zip file, choose Extract All, and open the extracted folder.
- Double-click MR Audio.exe. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway.
Split a song into vocals, drums, bass and more
Song Splitter uses Demucs, an open-source AI model, to separate a finished song into individual stems: vocals, drums, bass and other instruments, or a six-stem mode that also isolates guitar and piano. Each stem opens as its own track that you can solo, mute, mix, edit and export.
What it is good for
- Practising along with a song with the guitar or bass removed
- Making backing tracks and karaoke versions by taking the vocals out
- Isolating vocals or drums for remixes, study or transcription
- Teaching: play each part of a song on its own in the classroom
Private and offline
The AI runs on your own computer, so your music is never uploaded and it works without an internet connection. A full-length song takes a few minutes to process on a typical computer, and it uses your processor rather than needing a graphics card. 8 GB of memory or more is recommended.
Want to record something first? Try the Voice Recorder or the Instrument Recorder, both free in your browser.
